Fartlek training is very simple but can be confusing because it seems so different or even weird. The main thing to remember with fartlek training is that it is completely random. It involves a combination of all the previously mentioned methods of training. This training can combine easy running with either hill work, or short fast bursts of speed for short time periods, with walking for long periods. There really are no rules to follow, just make sure you are changing things throughout the training session. The point is to constantly keep your body in a state of shock so it can not adapt to one training method.
There are a few effects that fartlek training will have on your body. First is the enhanced ability for your muscles to use oxygen. Your body will also have a faster clearing rate of lactic acid build up. You will also increase your fuel utilization and your exercise economy, or your body’s ability to go at higher speeds and use less energy.
